SACRAMENTO, Calif. — UC Davis catcher Tyler LaTorre’s RBI-single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Brandon Oliver to lead UC Davis to a 3-2 win over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon in both teams’ season openers at Dobbins Stadium.With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Oliver reached on an error and advanced to second on Lucas Kirby’s ground out, before LaTorre’s single allowed him to score the winning run from second.
Things had been tied at 2-2 since the top of the eighth inning when trailing by one run, Sacramento State second baseman Gary Johnson led off the inning with a double to right field. Senior outfielder Ronnie Machado, Jr., flied out to right field, advancing Johnson to third, before senior Pat Keiper’s sacrifice fly scored Johnson from third.
Johnson, a junior in his first season with Sacramento State out of Sierra JC, was responsible for the Hornets first run of the game when he homered to left field, leading off the fourth inning and tying the game at 1-1.
UC Davis took a momentary 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the seventh inning when Dan Baldini homered to left field off senior left-hander Matt Campbell.
Campbell took the loss for the Hornets after entering the game in the fifth inning and allowing three hits and two runs (one earned), while recording four strikeouts.
Senior right-hander Travis Kane pitched 3.2 innings in the start, allowing five hits and one run.
UC Davis’ Nick Aurora, who pitched the ninth and 10th innings for the Aggies, picked up the victory.
Sacramento State had an opportunity to take the lead late in the game when senior center fielder Jim Strombach led off the seventh inning with a double. Senior catcher Buddy Morales laid down a bunt along the first base line, but Michael Jacobellis was able to make the throw to Evan Hudson, getting Strombach out at third.
Sacramento State, which starts its season with its first four games on the road, next travels to Saint Mary’s on Tuesday, Feb. 7, for a 2 p.m. start.
