BASEBALL TAKES TWO FROM UTAH VALLEY STATE IN SATURDAY’S DOUBLE HEADER

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State extended its current winning streak to five games, with two wins over Utah Valley State on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Hornets are now 16-20-1 on the season after a 14-5 victory in the first game of the double header and a 7-6 victory in the second game. Sacramento State has now won eight of its last nine games and holds a 3-0 lead in the series with the Wolverines. The final game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Hornet Field.

In the first game, Sacramento State set season-highs in runs (14) and hits (17). Left-hander Matt Campbell earned the win after pitching six innings and allowing three runs on six hits. The San Carlos, Calif., native struck out seven batters and is now 3-5 on the season with a 4.23 ERA.

Seven Hornets recorded multiple hits in the game, including senior Brett Flowers who went 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs and two runs. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native also hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season in the first inning. The blast landed on top of the parking garage and scored junior Brian Blauser and freshman Taylor Watanabe.

The Hornets, who have outscored their opponents 41-20 in first innings this season, took a 5-0 after the first and jumped out to an 11-0 lead after scoring six runs in the second inning. Watanabe , Flowers and junior Brian Conradi all picked up RBIs in the second, while senior Matt Wilson earned two RBIs when his third home run of the season (11th career) sailed over the left field wall to score Conradi.

Watanabe, who was the only player to record a double in the game (his third of the season), went 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs in the second spot of the lineup. The Aiea, Hawaii, native also leads the team with a .357 batting average.

Blauser went 2-for-5 and scored two runs. Conradi, a Bakersfield, Calif., native who is batting .325 on the season, went 2-for-5 with one RBI and one run. Wilson finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Billy Sinacori went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Senior Pedro Santiago also had two runs while junior Everet Rincon recorded two hits.

Brady Drake took the loss for Utah Valley State (11-27) after pitching 1.1 innings and giving up 11 runs (eight earned) on eight hits. The Wolverines’ Trent Perry went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs. Canyon Vance and Nick Connor also recorded multiple hits in the game.

In the second game, Sacramento State squeaked out a 7-6 victory, scoring the game-wining runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Senior Warren Rosebrock relieved junior Kyle Christensen in the top of the fourth inning. Rosebrock, a Citrus Heights, Calif., native earned the win after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits while also recording four strikeouts.

Rosebrock is now 3-3 this year and has 4.50 ERA. Senior Marshall Plouffe came on in the eighth inning to earn his fourth save of the season. The Crespi HS graduate retired the last four batters of the game.

After the first inning the score was tied at 2-2, but the Wolverines took a 3-2 lead in the third inning when Eli Sesk singled to score Vance. In the fifth inning, the Wolverines responded with another run for a 4-2 lead that was short lived. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Watanabe’s sacrifice fly and Blauser’s single scored senior Travis Kassebaum and Rincon, evening the score at 4-4. Watanabe finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run. Watanabe is currently on a five-game hitting streak and has recorded five multiple-hit games in 2005.

The Hornets took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning when Conradi singled to score Flowers. Sacramento State then added tow much-needed runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-4 lead when junior Jim Strombach scored on a wild pitch and Conradi’s sacrifice fly scored Watanabe. Aside from Watanabe, Strombach was the only other Hornet to record multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs. He continues to lead the team in hits (46) and runs (30) from the leadoff spot.

The Wolverines responded with two runs in the eighth inning to make things close, but Plouffe came on to close out the game.

Jed Jensen took the loss for Utah Valley State after pitching seven innings and allowing seven runs (five earned ) on nine hits.
