STROMBACH TALLIES THREE RBIS IN BASEBALL'S SPLIT WITH HAWAI’I-HILO

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State and Hawai’i-Hilo split a pair of games in Saturday’s double header at Hornet Field. The Hornets took the first game, recording their second shutout of the season, 9-0. In the second game, the Vulcans responded with a 6-3 win.

Sacramento State continues its lead in the weekend series 2-1, and the fourth and final game will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Hornet Field.

The Hornets are now 11-20-1 on the season, while Hawai’i-Hilo is now 3-33.

In the first game, junior Jim Strombach went 3-for-5 from the plate, recording three RBIs and scoring one run. The Aiea, Hawaii, native continues to lead the team in hits (37) and runs (23), he now has nine multiple-hit games this season. Senior Matt Wilson, who is batting .273 in the last three games, recorded two doubles in three at-bats and also scored a run. Senior Brett Flowers picked up his team-leading 23rd RBI of the season in the first inning.

Junior Kyle Christensen earned his second win of the season allowing just five hits in five innings of work. Junior Travis Kane came on in relief pitching three innings and allowing just two hits, while senior Brandon Hall pitched the final inning of the game without surrendering a hit.

The Hornets scored four runs to improve their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning of the game. The scoring started with Wilson earning a run after Hawai’i-Hilo’s third baseman was called for obstruction. Junior Josh Levin then scored on an error by the catcher. Junior Everet Ricon and freshman Taylor Watanabe scored when Strombach singled up the middle.

Sacramento State slammed the door shut in the sixth inning scoring another three runs. Strombach recorded his third RBI of the game when his single to right field allowed Rincon to score from second base. Strombach scored later in the inning and senior Travis Kassebaum crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Kyle Neuberger took the loss for the Vulcans after going 5.1 innings and allowing seven hits and seven runs (three earned). Sean Tamura and Christopher Campbell had two hits apiece in the game.

In the second game, Hawai’i-Hilo scored three unanswered runs in the final three innings of the game to pull away from the Hornets for the 6-3 win.

Sacramento State went ahead 2-0 in the first inning after Strombach scored on a RBI ground out from Wilson and Kassebaum scored when junior Brian Blauser doubled down the left field line. Blauser, an Elk Grove, Calif., native is batting .364 in the last three games and has also picked up two doubles, bringing his season total to four.

Hawai’i-Hilo tied things up in the top of the fourth 2-2, but Sacramento State’s Cliff Hinkle homered over the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Hornets a 3-2 advantage. It was Hinkle’s first home run of the season and fifth of his career. The Vulcans struck again in the top of the sixth to tie things up at 3-3 before scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.

Tamura singled to score Gary Ahu, Jr. from second base to give the Vulcans a 4-3 lead. In the top of the ninth Hawai’i-Hilo added insurance runs when Ahu tripled down the left field line, scoring Jimmy Crider and and Alvis Satele. The Vulcans were aided by Eddie Gutierrez’s performance on the mound. In his second win of the season, he closed the game and in 4.1 innings held the Hornets scoreless while surrendering just one hit.

Junior James Wheeler (0-1) took the loss for the Hornets after coming on in relief for senior Ken Livesey in the fifth inning. Wheeler went four innings allowing three hits and three runs (two earned).

Wilson, Blauser and Hinkle all picked RBIs for the Hornets.

Sacramento State and Hawai’i-HIlo will return to the diamond to end their four-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Hornet Field.
