RINCON TALLIES TWO HITS AS BASEBALL FALLS TO NO. 24 CAL POLY
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly’s Gary Daley (5-0) remained undefeated after pitching five innings in an 11-2 win over Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.Daley allowed just two runs on four hits while tallying four strikeouts as the No. 24 Mustangs improved to 30-14 after sweeping Sacramento State 3-0 in the teams’ weekend series.
The Hornets fall to 18-27-1 on the season.
Sacramento State’s Travis Kane (2-4) took the loss after pitching four innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.
Cal Poly took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning after JJ Owen’s two-RBI single scored Jimmy Van Ostrand and Matt Cooper. Bret Berglund then doubled down the left field line to score Kyle Blumenthal and Owen.
Cooper, who also hit a three-run blast over the left field wall in the seventh inning, went 2-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and three runs. Van Ostrand finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run and Owen was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Sacramento State scored in the second inning to make the score 4-1, when junior Everet Rincon’s single scored sophomore Mick Joyce from second base. For Joyce, who started in right field, it was his first start of the season.
The Hornets closed the Mustangs’ lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning when freshman David Flores led off the inning with a single to left field. Rincon’s sacrifice bunt advanced Flores to second base and junior Jim Strombach’s fly out to first base allowed Flores to advance to third. Flores, a Union City, Calif., native then scored the Hornets’ second run on a wild pitch.
Nursing a 4-2 lead after five innings, Cal Poly scored a combined seven unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.
Rincon finished his day 2-for-3 with one RBI and one sacrifice hit. The Riverside, Calif., native started all three games in the series with Cal Poly, batting .375 (3-for-8). Joyce played in all three games and hit .400 (2-for-5).
