KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Senior Brett Flowers and junior Brian Conradi both recorded two hits apiece as Sacramento State fell to Kansas State 14-3 at Community America Ballpark at the Best of the Midwest Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.The Hornets (18-23-1) took an early 3-0 lead after scoring three runs in the second inning. Senior Matt Wilson’s ground out scored Flowers for the first run. An error allowed Conradi, who had doubled to right center earlier in the inning, to score. Junior Everet Rincon’s ground out then scored freshman David Flores.
Junior pitcher Travis Kane held Kansas State at bay for the first three innings, not allowing a run. But in the fourth inning the Wildcats took a 4-3 lead after scoring four runs.
Kane (2-3) took the loss for he Hornets, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits.
Kansas State (21-18) had its biggest inning in the bottom of the fifth when the team scored six runs. For the game, the Wildcats totaled 13 hits compared to Sacramento State’s eight.
Joe Roundy led Kansas State going 3-for-4 fro the plate with two RBIs and two runs. Cris Tapia went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Terry Blunt, Steve Murphy and David Baker hit one home run each for the Wildcats.
Brad Hutt (1-0) was credited with the win for Kansas State after pitching five innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits. Eric Rollins pitched the final four innings and did not allow a run while surrendering only three hits.
Conradi and senior Travis Kassebaum both recorded doubles in the game for the Hornets. Conradi and Flowers each finished 2-for-3 with each player scoring a run. Also collecting hits were senior Pedro Santiago, sophomore Billy Sinacori, Kassebaum and Rincon.
Sacramento State will continue its play in the Best of the Midwest Tournament on Wednesday playing Kansas. The game is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. PST.
