FLOWERS HITS FIFTH HOME RUN OF SEASON, BASEBALL FALLS 4-3 TO UC IRVINE

4/24/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In its second game of the weekend, Sacramento State fell 4-3 to UC Irvine at the Hornet Jamboree on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Anteaters went 3-0 during the tournament and the Hornets finished 1-1 after defeating fifth-ranked Arizona 7-4 on Saturday. Arizona went 0-3 at the Jamboree after losing its first two games to UC Irvine and dropping its final game to Sacramento State.

The Hornets (18-22-1) took the early advantage in Sunday’s game going ahead 1-0 in the first inning when senior Brett Flowers singled through the middle scoring freshman Taylor Watanabe.

Sacramento State added to its lead in the fourth inning when Flowers hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season over the left field wall. Flowers, a Huntington Beach, Calif., native finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run. He is third on the team with a .313 batting average and coming into the weekend was ranked third in the country in batters toughest to strike out. Flowers also leads the team with 33 RBIs and has now produced 10 multiple-RBI games on the season.

Down 2-0, UC Irvine responded in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 2-2. The Anteaters scored their first run when Cody Cipriano’s ground out scored Matt Anderson. The second run was scored when Mark Wagner doubled down the left field line scoring Ollie Linton.

In the seventh inning, UC Irvine took its final lead of the game when Cipriano got his second RBI of the day with a solo shot over the left field wall. Jaime Miramontes then singled to center field scoring Danny McCarthy. Miramontes finished his day 2-for-3 with one RBI.

The Hornets made a valiant comeback in the bottom of the seventh that started with a double from freshman David Flores. It was the Union City, Calif., native’s fifth double of the season and the only one registered by a Hornet in the game. Sophomore Billy Sinacori’s ground out advanced Flores to third base and junior Jim Strombach was then walked. With two outs, Strombach baited UC Irvine’s pitcher Steve Schroer as he attempted to steal second base. Strombach returned to first base safely and Flores alertly was able to steal home beating the throw at the plate, bringing the score to 4-3.

Flores was one of three Hornets to record multiple hits in the game. The James Logan HS graduate went 2-for-3 at the plate and Watanabe finished his day 2-for-4. The Aiea, Hawaii, native leads the team with a .339 batting average.

Down 4-3, Sacramento State was unable to record a hit in the final two innings. UC Irvine’s Blair Erickson picked up the save retiring the last three batters of the game.

Senior right-hander Marshall Plouffe (2-2) took the loss after coming on in relief for junior Matt Campbell in the sixth inning. Campbell went 5.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three. Plouffe pitched 3.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits.

Nash Robertson was credited with the win for UC Irvine, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing just one run on three hits.

Sacramento State’s seven-game home winning streak was snapped, but in the month of April the Hornets are now 10-5, winning 10 of their last 13 games.

Sacramento State will be on the road this week playing Kansas on Tuesday and Kansas State on Wednesday. The Hornets will then travel to Cal Poly for a three-game series, Friday-Sunday. The Hornets return home, Tuesday, May 3 for a 2:30 p.m. game against Santa Clara.
