KANE AND STROMBACH HELP BASEBALL TO 8-3 VICTORY OVER WOLVERINES

4/17/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Junior Jim Strombach went 3-for-5 from the plate and junior Travis Kane earned his second win of the season in the Hornets’ 8-3 victory over Utah Valley State on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.

Sacramento State completed the four-game series sweep of the Wolverines (11-29) and has now won nine out of its last 10 games. The sweep of Utah Valley State is the first series sweep for the Hornets since a 4-0 sweep of Pacific last season. The team’s current six-game winning streak is a season-high and the longest for the program since the 1998 season.

Sacramento State (17-20-1) was aided one again by Kane (2-2). The right-hander out of Wenatchee, Wash., picked up his second win of the week, pitching 7.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He also struck out eight batters in the game and in four separate innings retired the side.

Earlier in the week, Kane pitched in a 9-4 victory over Cal. In his last two starts, Kane has pitched 14.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits while recording 14 strikeouts.

Junior Jim Strombach helped out at the plate for the Hornets. The Aiea, Hawaii native was the only Hornet to record multiple hits, going 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs. Strombach, who is batting .314, leads the team in hits (49), runs (32) and stolen bases (12).

A five-run second inning helped the Hornets jump out to an early 5-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, junior Everet Rincon doubled to center field scoring senior Matt Wilson and junior Brian Conradi. For Rincon, a Riverside, Calif., native it was his second RBI of the series with the Wolverines.

Strombach then doubled down the left field line to score Rincon for the third run of the inning. Strombach scored later in the inning on an error and freshman Taylor Watanabe alertly scored the fifth run of the inning on a wild pitch.

The Wolverines scored two runs in the seventh inning, but the Hornets responded with three runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Wilson hit his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall scoring junior Josh Levin and making the score 8-2.

Utah Valley State’s Dan Bulow hit his second home run of the series in the top of the ninth inning to score the Wolverines’ third run, but sophomore Justin Demé retired the final batter for the final out of the game to give Sacramento State an 8-3 victory.

Kam Mickolio took the loss for the Wolverines after pitching six innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits. Eli Sesk went 2-for-4 with one run for Utah Valley State and Cory Newton went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Sacramento State, who has enjoyed the luxury of its last 10 games at home, will travel to San Francisco on Tuesday for a 2:30 p.m. game. The team will return to Hornet Field this weekend for the Hornet Jamboree with Arizona and UC Irvine. Arizona and UC Irvine will start off the three-day jamboree on Friday with a 2 p.m. game at Hornet Field. They will play one another once again at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Hornet Field. Sacramento State will then play Arizona at 2 p.m. on Saturday and end the series with a 1 p.m. game against UC Irvine on Sunday at Hornet Field.
