KANE PITCHES MARVEL IN BASEBALL’S 9-4 VICTORY OVER CAL

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A tremendous performance from junior Travis Kane on the mound and a season-high three home runs from Sacramento State’s offense helped the Hornets to a 9-4 victory over Cal on Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field.

Kane, a Wenatchee, Wash., native earned his first win of the season after pitching 7.1 innings and holding the Golden Bears two runs on four hits. A transfer out of Walla Walla JC, Kane collected six strikeouts in his 10th appearance and fifth start of the season.

Sacramento State improves to 13-20-1 and has won five of its last six games, all at Hornet Field. The win was the fourth the Hornets have collected over a Pac-10 team this season. Cal falls to 23-14 on the season after the loss.

Cal took a early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when a sacrifice fly from Allen Craig scored Chris Errecart. Sacramento State quickly answered in the bottom of the inning when freshman David Flores hit a three-run blast over the left field wall. For Flores, a Union City, Calif., native, it was his second home run of the season and his seventh start of the season at third base.

In the fifth inning it was another freshman, Taylor Watanabe, who came through at the plate. Watanabe, who is batting .281, singled up the middle with two outs to score senior Matt Wilson and junior Jim Strombach, making the score 5-1. Watanabe, an Aiea, Hawaii, native has now started nine games at second base this season, with the Hornets sporting a 6-3 record in those games.

Sacramento State, who tallied a season-high 14 hits, continued its scoring in the sixth inning when Wilson’s ground ball scored senior Travis Kassebaum, giving the Hornets a 6-1 advantage. Kassebaum finished with two hits in three at-bats and one run. The seventh run soon followed, when senior Pedro Santiago singled to right field, scoring Strombach.

Strombach finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs. The Aiea, Hawaii, native continues to lead the team in hits (42) and runs (26). He is also batting .304 in the leadoff spot.

In the seventh inning it was a solo shot to left field from junior Brian Conradi that improved the score to 8-1. For the Bakersfield, Calif., native it was his second hoe run of the season and he continues to lead the team with a .314 batting average. Conradi finished the game 3-for-5, with one RBI and two runs.

In the top of the eighth inning, Cal tried to make things close, scoring three runs. Brennan Boesch doubled down the left field line to score Errecart, before Jeremy Burchett hit a two-run blast over left field wall, brining the score to 8-4.

Senior Brett Flowers hit the Hornets’ third home run of the game in the eighth inning to give the Hornets a 9-4 lead. For Flowers, a Huntington Beach, Calif., native, the home run was his third of the season and fifth of his career. Flowers finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs.

Right-hander Marshall Plouffe finished the Bears off in the top of the ninth inning, striking out Errecart for the final out of the game.

Cal’s Joe Todoroff (3-2) took the loss, going five innings and giving up five runs on eight hits.

Sacramento State will host Utah Valley State this weekend in a four-game series. On Friday, first pitch is set for 2 p.m. Saturday is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. for a double header.
