SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior left-hander Marshall Hendon picked up his first win of the season and senior right-hander Warren Rosebrock registered his first save in the Hornets’ 9-7 win over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field. Hendon (1-0), who currently has an ERA of 1.38, pitched 2.2 innings giving up two runs (zero earned) and helping Sacramento State take the lead for good in the sixth inning.
Rosebrock came on in the eighth inning with runners at first and third, and retired UC Davis first baseman Lukas Kirby, preserving the Hornets’ 9-7 lead. In the ninth inning, Rosebrock struck out three consecutive batters to end the game. The Valley Christian HS graduate has a 4.18 ERA in a team-high 13 appearances on the mound.
Sacramento State, now 9-19-1, produced nine runs, tying a season high that dates back to a 9-8 win over Washington State on Feb. 5.
The Hornets trailed by a score of 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning before they first got on the scoreboard. Junior Jim Strombach picked up his seventh RBI of the season when his single to center field off Aggie starter Vince DeCoito scored senior Travis Kassebaum.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Hornets put up three runs on the scoreboard, knotting things up at 4-4. With two outs and a runner on first base, freshman Taylor Watanabe doubled to right center, scoring senior Brett Flowers. Watanabe then scored on an UC Davis error. Watanabe, who started at second base for the fifth time this season, is now on a three-game hitting streak. In the three-game weekend series against the Aggies he finished 4-for-7 with one run and two RBIs.
In the fourth inning, UC Davis (16-11) committed three errors and sophomore Billy Sinacori scored the Hornets’ fourth run of the game off an errant throw.
Senior Matt Wilson got into the act when he homered (second of the season, 10th-career) over the left field wall to lead off the fifth inning, giving Sacramento State a 5-4 lead. The Aggies tied things at 5-5 temporarily, before a four-run inning in the bottom of the sixth gave the Hornets a 9-5 lead.
Junior Everet Rincon, currently on a three-game hitting streak, singled through the middle to score Sinacori. With the bases loaded the Aggies’ Nik Aurora came onto pitch, as Wilson picked up his second RBI of the game when his sacrifice fly scored Kassebaum. Sophomore Mick Joyce followed Wilson with his first at-bat of the season and the Temecula, Calif., native doubled to left field, scoring Strombach and Rincon. Strombach continues to lead the team with 21 runs.
Sacramento State had a 9-5 advantage after seven innings, but UC Davis put up two runs in the eighth inning to make things close before Rosebrock shutout the Aggies at the plate for the rest of the game.
Senior Ken Livesey started the game for Sacramento State, pitching five innings and giving up five runs and seven hits.
Wilson and Joyce led the team with two RBIs apiece, while Sinacori and Kassebaum scored two runs apiece. Wilson, currently on a three game hitting streak finished the day going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBIs. Watanabe finished the day 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Rincon also finished his day 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
UC Davis’ Justin Fitzgerald (0-1) took the loss for the Aggies after going 2/3 inning and giving up four runs.
At the plate, UC Davis was led by Kirby, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run. Brandon Oliver went 2-for-4 for the Aggies with two runs and one RBI.
Sacramento State now begins an eight-game home stand, hosting a four-game series with Hawai’i-Hilo next weekend. The first game is scheduled
for 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. Friday’s game will also begin at 2 p.m. , with Saturday’s and Sunday’s game starting at 1 p.m.
