SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Davis pitcher Dave McKae pitched eight shutout innings in the Aggies 4-1 win over Sacramento State at Hornet Field on Friday afternoon.The Aggies improve to 15-10 on the season, with McKae now posting a 5-1 record. For the Hornets, now 8-18-1, senior right-hander Ethan Katz (2-6), who was named Division I Independent Pitcher of the Week after pitching in a 4-3 win over Stanford last Friday, took the loss. Katz pitched four innings allowing six hits and two runs while striking out three.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings of the game, before the Aggies put up one run in both the fourth and fifth innings.
UC Davis’ David Huffman singled to centerfield to score Daniel Baldini for the Aggies’ first run in the fourth inning. In the fifth, it was a single from Kevin James that scored Daniel Descalso, giving the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
UC Davis was led at the plate by Huffman, who went 3-for-4 and had two RBIs on the afternoon. James was 2-for-4 from the plate with one RBI and one run.
Hornet senior pitcher Warren Rosebrock came on in the fourth inning for Katz and gave up two runs in the top of the eighth when Lukas Kirby and James scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler LaTorre and a single from Huffman. Prior to the eighth inning, Rosebrock had retired six consecutive batters, including five strikeouts.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Sacramento State freshman second baseman Taylor Watanabe picked up his second RBI of the season when he doubled down the left field line to score senior Pedro Santiago.
At the plate the Hornets were led by senior Matt Wilson, who went 2 for 4 from the plate.
The game was the first in a three-game series, with UC Davis hosting the Hornets at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Dobbins Stadium. The teams will end the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Hornet Field.
