Sacramento, Calif. – UC Riverside’s Haley Winter went eight innings, holding Sacramento State to one run, in a 7-1 win over the Hornets. The win gives the Highlanders a sweep of the series with Sacramento State, 2-0, and also improves their record to over .500, 11-10.
The Hornets fall to 7-11-1 on the season. Pitcher Matt Campbell (1-2) took the loss for Sacramento State, pitching seven innings and giving up five earned runs.
UC Riverside had a 3-0 lead going into the sixth inning, before Matt Cunningham’s three-run blast over the left field wall, put the Highlanders ahead 6-0.
The Hornets scored their only run of the game in the eighth inning, when a single to left field from junior Jim Strombach scored junior Brain Conradi. Strombach continues to lead the team with a .333 batting average. The Aiea, Hawaii, native also leads the team with a four-game hitting streak.
Junior Pat Keiper had two hits in the game for Sacramento State, while Aaron Grant led UC Riverside with three. Brett Bigler and Nick Salotti also scored two runs each for the Highlanders.
Sacramento State’s next five games are on the road. The Hornets will play at Saint Mary’s on Tuesday, March 15 at 2 p.m. Sacramento then travels for a three-game weekend series at Oregon State from March 18-20.
