HONOLULU - Sacramento State fell 6-3 to UC Davis on Saturday in the final day of the First Hawai’i Title Baseball Tournament. The Hornets went 2-3 at the five-game tourney and are now 7-9-1 on the season.Jim Strombach continued his success at the plate, leading the team with three hits and scoring one run. His 24 hits on the season already surpass his total from last year.
Seniors Pedro Santiago and Matt Wilson each recorded an RBI apiece. The Hornets scored two runs in the first two innings and have now outscored their opponents 22-4 in first innings this season.
With the score tied at 2-2 after three innings both teams went the three following innings scoreless. In the top of the seventh inning, the Aggies Lukas Kirby doubled to right field, scoring two.
Tyler LaTorre singled later in the inning to score Kirby. The Aggies added another run in the eighth inning to give them a 6-2 lead. The Hornets battled back, but fell short scoring one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Santiago hit a solo home run over the right field wall.
It is his first homer of the season and the third for the Hornets as a team. Santiago now has three home runs in his career.
The loss went to sophomore Mick Joyce, who pitched 2.0 innings and gave up four hits and two earned runs. Senior Ken Livesey made the start for Sacramento State, pitching 4.2 innings and also giving up two earned two runs.
The win went to UC Davis’ Peter Soskin, pitching the final four innings of the game, giving up three hits and one earned run.
The Hornets will return home to host a two-game series with UC Riverside on Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
