FLOWERS CONTINUES HITTING STREAK AS BASEBALL FALLS TO WICHITA STATE

Sacramento State suffered a 9-3 loss to Wichita State on Wednesday night at the First Hawai’i Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament.

Sacramento State is now 1-1 after two games in the five-day tourney, after defeating Hawai’i, 8-5, in a 13-inning thriller on Tuesday night. The Hornets overall record falls to 6-7-1, while the Shockers improve to 12-1.

Sacramento State took an early 2-0 lead, in the first inning. With the bases loaded, senior Brett Flowers doubled down the left field line off Wichita State pitcher Kris Johnson to score junior Brian Conradi and junior Josh Levin. Flowers has now produced four RBIs in his last two games.

The Shockers evened things up in the top of the third, when Tyler Hill singled to right field off Hornet pitcher Travis Kane, scoring Phil Napolitan and Joe Muich and tying the score at 2-2. The Hornets took a short 3-2 lead in the fourth inning when freshman Brett Tanigawa singled, recording his first hit and RBI of the season, scoring senior Ronnie Machado, Jr.

The Shockers evened things at 3-3 in the fifth inning and put things out of reach, scoring a combined six runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Kane started the game for the Hornets, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs. Senior Warren Rosebrock (1-1) took the loss after pitching 1.2 innings and allowing two runs and three hits.

Junior Jim Strombach recorded a hit in the game to extend his team-leading hitting streak to six games, while Levin and Conradi recorded two hits apiece in the game.

Kyle Touchatt (2-0) pitched his way to his second win of the season for Wichita State and Damon Sublett led the Shockers with two hits and three RBIs.

Sacramento State will continue its play in the tournament on Thursday, playing Louisiana-Lafayette at 1:30 p.m. PST.
