Sacramento, Calif .- Sacramento State fell to Saint Mary’s, 8-1, after the Gaels produced a five-run inning in the top of the sixth. The game was called after seven innings because of poor weather conditions.Sunday’s double header with Saint Mary’s (2-5) has been postponed and will not be played on Sunday, Feb. 20. A date has not yet been chosen to make up the games.
Sacramento State now falls to 2-6 on the season. Senior pitcher Ethan Katz (0-2) took the loss for the Hornets after going five innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs. The Los Angeles, native also struck out seven.
For Saint Mary’s, Joel Fountain (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, pitching seven innings, allowing five hits and one run.
The Hornets scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Everet Rincon was walked to start off the inning, and the Riverside, Calif. native then stole his first base of the season. Senior Pedro Santiago then singled up the middle to score Rincon from second. For Santiago, it was his third RBI of the season and he currently leads the team with a .438 batting average.
Ahead 3-1 going into the top of the sixth inning, the Gaels had their most productive inning of the game. On the first pitch of the inning, Preston Young homered over the center field wall. Later in the inning Delaney Gallagher, Adam Thompson, Stefan Foushee, and Sam Carter crossed the plate.
Carter led Saint Mary’s with three RBI, one run and one hit. Frederick Orbean was also successful at the plate, finishing with two RBI and two hits in three at-bats.
Santiago led the Hornets with two hits. Junior pitcher James Wheeler pitched the final two innings of the game for the Hornets after coming in for Katz in the sixth, allowing two hits and one run.
Sacramento State will return to Hornet Field on Tuesday, Feb. 22 against Nevada before a four-game home series with North Dakota State from Feb. 24-26.
