Sacramento State fell 7-4 to Santa Clara on Wednesday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The game was rescheduled from Tuesday because of poor weather conditions.
In the Hornets’ first road game of the season, Sacramento State gave up two-consecutive three-run innings, to give the Broncos a four-run lead heading into the final three innings of the game.
The Hornets had another quick start, scoring two runs in the first two innings. In five of the team’s seven games this season, the team has scored at least one run in the game’s first two innings.
In the first inning, junior Everet Rincon was walked by Santa Clara pitcher Chris Stansbury. After a wild pitch from Stansbury and sacrifice bunt from senior Travis Kassebaum, Rincon scored on a balk.
In the second inning, Stansbury again walked the first batter, putting junior Brian Conradi on base. Conradi stole second and junior Jim Stombach then doubled to left field to score Conradi. For Strombach, it was his first double of the season and third RBI.
Ahead 2-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Hornets allowed Santa Clara to score three runs in the both the fourth and fifth innings. The Broncos were led by Kris Watts, who had three hits and three RBI on the afternoon. Dustin Realini finished the game with two hits and two RBI for Santa Clara.
Sacramento State scored again in the top of the fifth inning and also scored a run in the top of the ninth inning, with first-year freshman David Flores scoring his first career run on sacrifice fly from sophomore Billy Sinacori.
Sinacori, Strombach and senior Pedro Santiago all registered one RBI apiece. Strombach now has three RBI on the year.
Santiago also finished with two hits along with junior Brian Blauser. Blauser, an Elk Grove, Calif., native leads the team with 10 hits this season.
Junior Travis Kane picked up the loss for the Hornets, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up five runs. In the final three innings of the game seniors Marshall Plouffe and Brandon Hall combined to hold the Broncos scoreless and to just three hits.
The win went to Santa Clara’s Scott Lonegran who pitched 2.0 innings without allowing a run.
