ERRORS COSTLY AS BASEBALL FALLS TO UC DAVIS

2/13/2005

Sacramento, Calif. - Sacramento State wrapped up play in the 2005 River City Classic, falling to UC Davis, 5-2, at Hornet Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies played a doubleheader, losing 2-1 to River City Classic champions Pacific, in the morning game.

Sacramento State and UC Davis held each other scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Sacramento State (2-4) put its first run of the game on the scoreboard. Junior Everet Rincon started off the inning with a single to right field, eventually scoring from second base when junior Brian Blauser singled later in the inning. Blauser, a Elk Grove, Calif., native now has four RBIs on the season.

UC Davis (3-2) responded in the top of the fifth inning, when Daniel Descalso singled to score Jaime Castillo and Tyler LaTorre, giving the Aggies a 2-1 lead.

The Hornets tied the score with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Blauser scored from second base on a hit by senior Matt Wilson. Wilson, a Canoga Park, Calif., native now leads the team with five RBIs, while Blauser has scored a team-leading five runs.

In its first three games of the season, Sacramento State was averaging 8.0 runs per game, but in the team’s last three games they have totaled just five.

Both teams had eight hits apiece, but the difference maker came in the top of the eighth inning when the Hornets committed four errors, assisting the Aggies in scoring three runs in the inning to go ahead for good.

Junior Matt Campbell took the loss for Sacramento State and Jeremy McChesney got the win for the Aggies after pitching the final three innings of the game allowing one hit and one run (zero earned.)

Sacramento State will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Santa Clara on Tuesday, Feb. 15 for a game at 3 p.m. The Hornets will then begin an away-home-away series with Saint Mary’s. Friday’s game at Saint Mary’s begins at 2 p.m. and on Saturday at Hornet Field, first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. On Sunday the game at Saint Mary’s will begin at 1 p.m.
