BASEBALL STRUGGLES TO MATCH SAN FRANCISCO AT THE PLATE

Sacramento, Calif. - In Sacramento State’s second game of the 2005 River City Classic, the Hornets struggled to get their bats going in a 12-1 loss to San Francisco on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field.

San Francisco (3-1) pitcher Nick Pereira got the win after going five innings on the mound allowing only four hits and one run. The right-hander also struck out four and walked two.

The Hornets’ (2-3) sole run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman David Flores picked up his second RBI in as many games, scoring junior Jim Strombach from third base.

Sacramento State pitcher Ken Livesey (0-1) picked up the loss after going 3.2 innings, giving up eight runs off six hits. Up 2-0 after three innings, San Francisco scored seven runs in the top of the fourth. The Dons, who were led by Andrew Smith’s game-high two RBIs, added runs in the fifth and seventh innings on their way to the win.

San Francisco’s Luke Sommer and Royce Fukuroku each recorded two hits, while Stefan Gartrell, Tavo Hall along with Sommer and Fukuroku scored two runs apiece.

Sacramento State senior Travis Kassebaum led the Hornets with two hits. In his second outing on the mound this season, sophomore Mick Joyce pitched 2.0 innings holding the Dons scoreless and not giving up a hit.

Sacramento State will play in the final game of the 2005 River City Classic on Sunday at 2 p.m. playing Causeway rival UC Davis at Hornet Field.
