Sacramento, Calif. - In the second game of the 2005 River City Classic, Sacramento State fell 6-2 to Saint Mary’s on Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.For the Gaels, it was their first win of the season after falling to Pacific 6-5 in 11 innings earlier in the afternoon.
The Hornets are now 2-2 on the season.
Saint Mary’s (1-4) was led by solid pitching with senior Kevin Trochez on the mound. The 6-2 right-hander got his first win of the year after pitching seven innings, allowing two runs and seven hits.
The Hornets’ Ethan Katz took the loss after allowing six runs in 4.1 innings.
The Gaels got on the scoreboard in the first inning, when Sam Carter hit a two-run home run. Saint Mary’s added one run in the third inning and in the fifth inning produced three runs, with Cody Nelson, Bryan Bryne and Carter scoring.
The Hornets were led offensively by junior Josh Levin and freshman David Flores, who each had one RBI apiece. For Flores, who started at shortstop, Friday’s game was the first of his collegiate career. Junior Brian Blauser also did well at the plate, recording three hits in five at bats. In four games, the Elk Grove, Calif., native is batting .368.
The Hornets first scored a run in the second inning on a Flores single that scored junior Brian Conradi, who had hit a triple to right field earlier in the inning.
Sacramento State’s second run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Levin singled and Blauser scored from second base.
Junior James Wheeler took the mound in the fourth inning, and went 3.2 innings without surrendering a run. Saint Mary’s Ian Farmer recorded a save after pitching the final two innings of the game and allowing only one hit.
Sacramento State returns to the diamond at 2 p.m. on Saturday to play San Francisco. Saint Mary’s will finish its play in the River City Classic at 1 p.m. on Saturday playing UC Davis at Dobbins Stadium.
