SANTIAGO’S THREE RUNS AND TWO HITS LEADS BASEBALL TO 8-6 WIN OVER COUGARS

Sacramento, Calif. - With an 8-6 win over Washington State on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field, the Hornets finish the weekend series with the Cougars, 2-1.

Pitcher Warren Rosebrock got his first win of the season for the Hornets (2-1) after coming in for relief in the fourth inning. A senior from Citrus Heights, Calif., Rosebrock pitched 5.1 innings allowing just five hits, zero runs and striking out three.

At the plate, Sacramento State was led by senior Pedro Santiago, who scored three runs and had two hits in three at bats. Also having multiple hits in the game were senior Matt Wilson and juniors Brian Conradi and Pat Keiper.

For the third-straight game, Sacramento State took an early lead scoring multiple runs in the first inning. Washington State pitcher Reese Baker gave up seven runs (four earned) in the game. The Hornets scored four runs initially, starting with a single from Santiago that scored junior Everet Rincon. Rincon had reached earlier in the inning on an error and for the game reached base on two errors and one walk, finishing the game with one run.

Later in the first inning, Wilson singled to score junior Brian Blauser while Keiper picked up his first RBIs of the season when his single scored Conradi and Santiago.

Washington State (1-2) trailed 4-0 in the top of third inning when Brady Everett hit a grand slam, with a previous run in the same inning, the Cougars took a short-lived lead 5-4. In the bottom of the third Santiago scored on a double by Josh Levine to even the score at 5-5.

Sacramento State took the lead for good in the fourth inning when a single from junior Jim Strombach scored senior Travis Kassebaum, who was walked and reached second on a wild pitch before stealing third base. Singles from Wilson and Conradi scored Strombach and Santiago to give the Hornets their final 8-6 lead.

Sacramento State will next play and host the 2005 Rive City Classic. Games begin on Friday at 10 a.m. with Saint Mary’s playing Pacific. The Hornets will then play Saint Mary’s at 2 p.m.
