A single from Brian Blauser in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Sacramento State a 9-8 win over Washington State on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field. Blauser, an Elk Grove, Calif. native, hit a grounder up the middle, scoring Darnell Guary from second.Guary, a freshman out of Center High School, has now scored two runs in his first two collegiate games as a pinch runner.
The Hornets (1-1) were led by senior catcher Matt Wilson, who had a game-high two RBIs and three hits.
Sacramento State again jumped out to a lead behind the pitching of junior Travis Kane. Kane, a junior from Wenatachee, Wash., pitched 5.0 innings, allowing only one hit while facing 17 batters.
Kane’s performance allowed the Hornets to mount a 7-0 lead, with Sacramento State scoring three runs in the first inning and four in the third. In the first, junior rightfielder Jim Strombach scored on a sacrifice bunt from junior Everet Rincon and a throwing error from Washington State. Blauser would later score on a single from Wilson and senior Brett Flowers also crossed the plate after junior Josh Levine singled to left field.
In the fourth inning the Hornets again got on the board with the help of an error by the Cougars (1-1). Washington State pitcher Wayne Daman, Jr. came into the game and allowed four hits quickly after two throwing errors in the infield. Levine first scored after a sacrifice bunt from senior Travis Kassebuam. A Rincon single scored Kassebaum later in the inning. After an intentional walk the Hornets had the bases loaded and a Wilson single scored Rincon.
With Sacramento State ahead 7-0, the Cougars mounted a comeback for the second-straight game, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Hornets walked the Cougars’ Brady Everett and Justin McAngus, before the bases were loaded on a single from Jim Murphy. The Hornets only gave up one hit in the inning but allowed Washington State to score six runs on four hit batters and one error, closing the score to 7-6.
Washington State added another two runs in the seventh inning, before Sacramento State tied things at 8-8 in he bottom of the eighth inning when Blauser scored on a Brian Conradi single.
Senior pitcher Marshall Plouffe, who has not pitched for the Hornets since 2003 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2004, allowed zero hits in the ninth inning to keep the Hornets in striking distance.
Plouffe got his first win of the season after pitching 2.1 innings and the loss went to Wsahington State’s Nick Cebula. Cebula also picked up a win earlier in the afternoon as the teams finished up Friday’s game that was delayed, tied at 7-7, due to darkness. In the 10th inning Jason Freeman gave the Cougars the go-ahead run. The loss for the Hornets was given to Kane.
Sacramento State will next play Washington State in the third game of the series at noon on Sunday at Hornet Field.
