BASEBALL POUNDS UNDEFEATED OREGON STATE, 10-3

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Senior Jack Arroyo went 3-for-5 and junior Warren Rosebrock earned his second win of the season as the Sacramento State baseball team pounded undefeated Oregon State, 10-3, in the second day of the RBI Tournament, Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex.

Sacramento State improved to 10-7 on the year while Oregon State fell to 7-1. The Hornets are now 1-1 against the Pacific-10 this season after finishing 3-6 against the conference in 2003. The squad dropped a 4-2 loss to Washington on Feb. 27.

Sacramento State opened a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a sacrifice fly by junior Brett Flowers scored junior Craig Johnson from third.

Oregon State evened the contest, 1-1, in the bottom to the inning when Mike Lissman hit a solo home run to left field.

The Hornets made it 3-1 in the second inning after an RBI double by junior Ronnie Machado, Jr., and an RBI single by Arroyo. Sacramento State added another run in the third when junior Matt Wilson doubled down the left-field line, scoring junior Bret LeVier from second.

The Beavers cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the third after an RBI single by Andy Jenkins through the left side scored Jacoby Ellsbury from third.

Sacramento State increased its lead to 6-2 in the fourth when Flowers recorded an RBI groundout to the pitcher and Johnson scored from third on a throwing error by OSU shortstop Tony Calderon. The Hornets added two more runs in the fifth when LeVier led off the inning with a home run to left field. For LeVier, a native of Whittier, Calif., it was his fourth home run of the season. Arroyo drove in the second run of the inning with an RBI single down the left-field line which allowed junior Jim Strombach to score from second base.

The Beavers made it 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Chad Shroeder drove in Mike Hass from second with a single through the left side.

Sacramento State added two more runs in the top of the eighth after sophomore Brian Blauser drove in Machado, Jr., from third with a sacrifice fly to left and junior Ryan Browne hit an RBI single through the left side.

Rosebrock (2-1) earned the win after allowing only three runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three in 5.2 innings of work. Seniors Renecke Stelzriede and Andy Mohr and freshman Justin Demé combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to contribute to the win.

Andy Baldwin (2-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits while walking four and striking out two in 4.0 innings.

Arroyo led the Hornet offense with three hits, two runs and two RBI. Machado, Jr., also added two hits (2-for-5) two runs and an RBI. The Hornets also stole four bases and committed no errors in the field.

Hass led the Oregon State offense with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate while Ellsbury and Chad Schroeder also added two hits each.

Sacramento State will next face host UC Riverside on Sunday, Feb. 29, at 3 p.m. at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Hornets will then host Nevada on Tuesday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at Hornet Field.
