KATZ LEADS BASEBALL TO 2-1 UPSET WIN OVER NO. 2 STANFORD

4/24/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior Ethan Katz hurled his fourth complete game of the season while holding second-ranked Stanford to only one run on four hits to lead the Sacramento State baseball team to a 2-1 upset win over the Cardinal, Saturday afternoon in front of 507 fans at Hornet Field. With the victory, the Hornets defeated their highest-ranked opponent in program history and ended a season-high five-game losing streak.

Sacramento State improved to 23-27 on the year while Stanford fell to 31-6. It marked the Hornets’ first win over the Cardinal since a 12-3 win at Raley Field on May 2, 2001.

Katz (7-4) allowed one unearned run and scattered four hits while walking four and striking out seven batters to earn the complete-game victory. The Los Angeles native also ended several streaks for the Cardinal including consecutive games with at least two runs (31), games with at least 10 hits (12) and a seven-game winning streak. Katz also ended hitting streaks for Brian Hall (21) and Sam Fuld (12). Stanford entered the contest with a 22-1 record vs. right-handed pitchers.

Jeff Gilmore (6-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while walking two and striking out three in 6.0 innings of work. The loss also ended Gilmore’s four-game winning streak. David O’Hagan added 2.0 innings of perfect relief for the Cardinal.

Both teams went scoreless through one inning until Stanford got on the board with a run in the top of the second. With one out, John Mayberry, Jr., singled to right field. While attempting to steal second, junior catcher Matt Wilson’s throw bounced off of Mayberry, Jr., and rolled into the hole in left field allowing him to advance to third. In the next at-bat, Donny Lucy hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Cardinal the early lead.

Sacramento State evened the score in the bottom of the third when junior Bret LeVier scored on an RBI groundout by senior Jack Arroyo. LeVier reached safely to lead off the inning after a fielding error by Cardinal shortstop Chris Minaker. After a walk to junior Jim Strombach, both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by junior Ronnie Machado, Jr. Arroyo followed with a grounder to short to score LeVier.

With Gilmore carrying a no-hitter through five innings, the Hornets took a 2-1 lead on their first hit of the afternoon. Machado, Jr., led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Arroyo. In the next at-bat, junior Craig Johnson pulled an 0-1 pitch past a diving Jed Lowrie in the hole towards right to score Machado, Jr., from second.

Stanford threatened in the ninth when Lucy singled to short right with one out and then stole second after a fly out by Chris Carter. Minaker battled to a 3-2 count but looked at strike three to end the contest.

Johnson (1-for-4) and sophomore Brian Blauser (1-for-3) were the only Hornets to record a hit in the contest. Johnson contributed to the win with stellar play in right field including a leaping grab at the wall on a foul fly ball hit by Lowrie in the eighth inning.

Sacramento State will next face Cal at Hornet Field on Tuesday, April 27, at 2:30 p.m.
