BASEBALL ENDS REGULAR SEASON WITH 5-3 LOSS AT SANTA CLARA

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Senior Montana Dye was 2-for-3 with a home run but Santa Clara completed a two-game sweep with another 5-3 win over Sacramento State on Sunday at Schott Stadium.

The Hornets closed their regular season with a 17-38 overall record. The Broncos improved to 27-29. Sacramento State will next face Fresno State on Thursday in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The game will begin at 11 a.m. at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev.

On Sunday, Dye put the Hornets up 2-0 with his eighth home run of the season. His blast to right center followed a bunt single by Tim Wheeler.

Santa Clara cut its deficit in half with a single run in the bottom of the second and then took the lead in the fifth with two runs on a Tommy Medica home run.

After SCU posted a run in the seventh, Sacramento State made the score, 4-3, with one run in the eighth when Blake Crosby singled home Patrick Cummins.

Four Sacramento State pitchers took the mound during the game. Senior Alvaro Orozco tossed the first two innings and allowed one run and two hits. Freshman Trevor York, who took the loss, pitched three innings with two runs and three hits. Tyler Axelrod and Mitch Lively were the final two hurlers. Axelrod threw 1.1 innings and allowed five hits and a run. Lively pitched the final 1.2 innings with a hit and an unearned run. He also struck out two.

Dye and David Flores each had two hits to lead the Hornets. Crosby, Gabe Jacobo, Wheeler, and Wes Oberlin added one hit apiece. Junior Ryan Blair finished 0-for-4 to have his season-long hitting streak snapped at 10 games.
