BASEBALL DROPS 4-2 CONTEST TO NO. 22 WASHINGTON

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Junior Ethan Katz struck out a season-high nine batters in six innings but 22nd-ranked Washington extended its winning streak to six games with a 4-2 win over the Sacramento State baseball team, Friday evening at the Riverside Baseball Invitational Tournament. In the earlier game, Oregon State defeated host UC Riverside, 13-3.

Sacramento State fell to 9-7 on the year while Washington improved to 6-1.

The Hornets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second after a run scoring balk and an RBI ground out by junior Ronnie Machado, Jr. Junior Andy Hnilo led off the inning with a walk and then moved to second on a bunt and third on a wild pitch before scoring on a balk. Junior Buddy Morales, who also walked, eventually scored on Machado, Jr.’s groundout.

The Huskies got a run back in the bottom of the second when they loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. John Otness, who''d started the two-out rally with a single to center, scored when Morales threw wildly on a pickoff attempt at first.

The UW tied it in the third after an RBI infield single by Kyle Larsen. Brent Lillibridge singled to lead off and then stole second before moving to third on another errant throw from Morales. Larsen reached on an infield single to score Lillibridge, tying the game at 2-2.

The Huskies took the look for good in the fourth after a solo homer by Ben Johnson. Washington made it 4-2 in the fifth after an RBI double by Taylor Johnson scored Lillibridge from first.

Freshman Richie Lentz (1-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on three hits and four walks in his five innings of work. Freshman Kyle Parker worked three no-hit innings and All-America closer Will Fenton threw a perfect ninth inning for his third save of the season.

Junior Ethan Katz (3-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine in six innings. Sophomore James Wheeler added a perfect inning of relief for the Hornets.

Lillibridge finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base and Taylor Johnson went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the UW offense. No other Husky and no Hornets had more than one hit on the night.

Sacramento State will next face Oregon State on Saturday, Feb. 28, at noon, before concluding the weekend against UC Riverside on Sunday, Feb. 29, at 3 p.m.
