DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior Andy Hnilo went 2-for-4 with a season-high four RBI but UC Davis scored seven runs in the first three innings en route to an 11-6 win over the Sacramento State baseball team Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
The Hornets are now 5-3 on the year while the Aggies improved to 1-3.
Sacramento State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Hnilo hit an RBI double and junior Bret LeVier drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. With one out, junior Craig Johnson drew a walk and then advanced to second on a base hit to third base by junior John Acha. In the next at-bat, Hnilo laced a double to right center to drive in Johnson. LeVier followed with a fly to center to bring in Acha from third.
UC Davis made it 3-2 in the bottom of the first after an RBI groundout by Andy Reisinger and a two-run double to right center by Matt Blankenheim.
The Aggies increased their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the second when Ryan Coultas hit a three-run home run over the left field wall.
The Hornets cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the third after an RBI groundout by LeVier. Senior Jack Arroyo led off the inning with a single in the hole to left and then advanced to second on a single through the right side by Johnson. Acha followed with a bunt single in front of the plate to load the bases. With one out, LeVier hit a ball off the end of the bat towards first to drive in Arroyo from third.
UC Davis made it 7-3 in the bottom of the third when Kyle Irving drove in Brandon Oliver from third with a sacrifice fly to center.
Sacramento State cut the lead to 7-6 in the top of the fifth after a three-run home run by Hnilo. Johnson led off the inning with a walk before moving to second on a single to left field by Acha. In the next at-bat, Hnilo hit a towering shot over the left field wall for his first homer of the season.
The Aggies added two runs in the bottom of the sixth when David Butterworth hit and RBI single to left field and Blankenheim drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center.
UC Davis made it 11-6 in the seventh after RBI groundouts by Irving and Coultas.
Paul Gonzales (1-0) earned the win after allowing no runs on two hits while walking one and striking out five in 5.0 innings of relief.
Sophomore Mel Cuckovich (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on three hits while walking two batters in 1.1 innings.
Hnilo, a native of Palo Alto, Calif., finished 2-for-4 with a run, a double, a home run and four RBI. Arroyo and Acha each finishd 3-for-5 in the game to also lead the Hornet offense.
Sacramento State will next face Saint Mary''s for a three-game series beginning at Hornet Field on Friday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. Game two of the series will shift to Luis Guisto Field on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. before the finale returns to Hornet Field on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m.
