TIMELY HITTING, STRONG PITCHING LEADS BASEBALL TO 3-2 WIN OVER UCSD

Senior Jack Arroyo’s solo home run the seventh inning and strong performances by the Hornet pitching staff led the Sacramento State baseball team to a 3-2 win over UC San Diego, Sunday afternoon at Triton Field.

The Hornets are now 5-2 on the year while the Tritons fell to 5-2. The victory gave Sacramento State the series win after defeating UC San Diego, 6-5, on Saturday afternoon. It also marked the second-consecutive series win for the Hornets this season.

UC San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of third after an RBI single by Damian Fante. With two outs, David Hawk singled up the middle and then stole second. After Ryan Langone drew a walk, Fante drove in the game’s first run.

Sacramento State evened the contest in the fifth when junior Brett Flowers hit an RBI single to short. Junior Ryan Browne led off the inning with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a groundout to second by Arroyo. After a walk to junior Craig Johnson and junior John Acha’s pop to second, Flowers hit a grounder into the hole in left which allowed Browne to score from second.

The Hornets took at 2-1 lead in the sixth after an RBI ground out by junior Buddy Morales. Junior Bret LeVier led off the inning with a triple to right center. In the next at-bat, Morales pulled a ground ball toward short which allowed LeVier to score.

The Tritons evened the game in the bottom of the sixth when Jeff Riddle hit and RBI single to left-center field. With two out, Keith Hernandez doubled down the left-field line. In the next at-bat, Riddle dropped a ball in the shallow gap in left to score Hernandez.

Sacramento State took the lead for good in the seventh when Arroyo led off the inning with a drive over the left-center wall. For Arroyo, a native of Manteca, Calif., it was his second home run of the season.

Junior Warren Rosebrock (1-0) earned the win after allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one in six innings of work. Freshman Billy Sinacori tallied his fourth save of the season by allowing only one hit while striking out one in the ninth. Freshman Mitch Lively also added two innings of perfect relief in his first appearance of the season.

Justin Allred (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing Arroyo’s solo shot in the seventh.

LeVier led the Hornets with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate. The Whittier, Calif., native is currently batting .345 on the year with 10 hits, three doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBI. Morales threw out three runners attempting to steal second in the contest.

Sacramento State will next travel to UC Davis to face the Aggies on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. The Hornets will conclude their week with a three-game series against Saint Mary’s. The first game will be at Hornet Field on Friday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. The second game will be played at Luis Guisto Field on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. before the series concludes at Hornet Field on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m.
