5/15/2011

Will Soto pushed his hit streak to eight games but the Hornets lost on Sunday at Nevada.

RENO, Nev. - The Sacramento State baseball team lost the series finale of a Western Athletic Conference series at Nevada, 10-0 in eight innings, on Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park.

The Hornets slipped to 18-36 (5-15 WAC) with the loss while Nevada improved to 20-27 (9-10 WAC) after the win. Sacramento State won the first game of the series on Friday while Nevada rebounded to take the next three games and win the series.

The game was called after the eighth inning due to the WAC's 10-run rule.

The Hornets mustered six hits and three walks but could not get anyone across the plate against Nevada starter Jeremy Cole (4-4), who earned the win after allowing no runs on six hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts. Sacramento State starter Tanner Mendonca (2-5) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Sacramento State used four relievers during the rest of the game while Nevada's Mat Keplinger and Timothy Culligan combined to pitch a scoreless eighth inning.

A total of six Hornets each had one hit, including Will Soto, who has 18 hits in his last eight games.

Sacramento State closes out the season with a four-game home series against Louisiana Tech starting on Friday, May 20.
