BASEBALL DROPS SERIES OPENER TO SAN JOSE STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - San Jose State scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and the Sacramento State baseball team lost 5-3 on Friday afternoon at John Smith Field in the first game of a four-game Western Athletic Conference series.
The Hornets slid to 14-29 (1-8 WAC) with the loss while the Spartans jumped to 28-15 (7-6 WAC) with the win. The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11:30 a.m. and conclude the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
San Jose State starter Roberto Padilla (8-3) earned the win after allowing three runs on five hits in seven innings with one walk and nine strikeouts - eight of them swinging. Sacramento State reliever Brandon Creel (2-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs (one earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings pitched with two walks and one strikeout. San Jose State closer Zach Jones tallied his eighth save of the season.
The Hornets started the scoring in the bottom of the third, recording all three of their runs in the inning.
Hunter Adrian reached on an error to lead off and moved to second on Dax Turner's single to left. Both came around to score on Derrick Chung's two-run double down the left field line. After Chung eventually moved to third, he scored on Andrew Ayer's sacrifice fly to left.
San Jose State evened up the game with one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth and took the lead for good with a two-run eighth inning.
Ayers went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hornets while three Spartans had multi-hit games.
Sacramento State starter Karl Maas lasted 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and no strikeouts.
