BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH NO. 12 RANKED FRESNO STATE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State baseball team used a walk-off win to split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with No. 12 ranked Fresno State on Saturday at John Smith Field.
The Hornets took game one, 2-1, after scoring both of its runs in the seventh inning while Fresno State scored six runs in the first inning and five more in the fourth of game two en route to a 12-4 victory.
The first game of WAC doubleheaders are seven innings.
The Hornets’ record now sits at 13-28 (1-7 WAC) while the Bulldogs record sits at 28-7 (8-3 WAC).

The Sacramento State baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win against No. 12 ranked Fresno State in the first game of Saturday’s WAC doubleheader.
With the Hornets down 1-0 heading into the seventh inning, Fresno State brought on closer Charlie Robertson.
Dax Turner led off with a ground out to first but
Justin Higley singled in the next at-bat. Higley moved to second on
Will Soto’s single to left and Higley advanced to third when
Eli Davis was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded and one out,
Derrick Chung tied up the game with a single through the right side on a 1-2 pitch.
Kirby Young didn’t wait as long, as he singled the first pitch he saw up the middle to give the Hornets their third walk-off win of the season.
It was Young’s second walk-off hit this season. On Feb. 21, Young’s RBI single in the 10th gave the Hornets a 3-2 win over rival UC Davis.
Fresno State reliever Robertson (0-3) took the loss while Sacramento State reliever
Brandon Creel earned his second win of the season after allowing just one hit in one inning pitched.
Each starter pitched well. Sacramento State’s
Brandon Sandoval allowed just one run on six hits in six innings with four strikeouts and four walks. Fresno State’s Tyler Linehan went five innings with five hits, five strikeouts and one walk.
Higley and Soto each went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hornets while Fresno State’s Aaron Judge was the only Bulldog with two hits.
Fresno State started the scoring in the first inning. In the second at-bat of the game, Garrett Weber blasted a solo home run over the right field fence.
The Hornets got leadoff singles in the third, fourth and fifth innings but could not bring home a run.
Sandoval battled all game but always seemed to get out of the jam. Fresno State stranded eight runners in the game.

Fresno State had two big innings and the Sacramento State baseball team lost the second game of its WAC doubleheader with No. 12 ranked Fresno State on Saturday at John Smith Field.
Fresno State starter Tom Harlan (3-2) earned the win while
Tanner Mendonca (1-4) took the loss.
Fresno State exploded in the first inning, getting six runs on five hits – including back-to-back home runs by Dusty Robinson and Jordan Ribera. Robinson leads the WAC with 10 big flies.
The Hornets answered with three runs in the second.
Will Soto led off with a single to center and after
Justin Higley struck out,
Dax Turner singled to move Soto to third.
Eli Davis hit an RBI single to left center to drive home Soto and advance Turner to second.
Derrick Chung followed with another single that scored Turner and the final run of the inning came when
Kirby Young beat out the throw on a bunt single.
Fresno State wasn’t done for the day, as they put another crooked number on the scoreboard in the fourth. The Bulldogs scored five runs on four hits and two errors in the frame, including Justin Charles’ home run to lead off the inning. Fresno State tacked on another single run in the eighth.
