JOHN SMITH RETIREMENT CELEBRATION SET FOR JUNE 25TH

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Following his final season after 32 years at the helm of the Sacramento State baseball program, John Smith will be honored at a retirement celebration scheduled for Friday, June 25.

The celebration will take place at the Alumni Center on the Sacramento State campus, located adjacent to Hornet Stadium and the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex, with dinner scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Coach Smith retired followed a career that produced 11 seasons with at least 30 wins and four years with at least 40 wins. His teams advanced to the NCAA West Regionals on four occasions and to the College World Series twice, finishing second in the nation in 1988. Under Coach Smith, 83 Hornets have signed professional contracts, 46 earned all-conference honors since 1993, and 16 earned All-America honors. An alumnus of Sacramento State with a bachelor’s degree in social science and a master’s degree in physical education, Coach Smith posted an impressive 879 victories, the most wins by a head coach in any sport in Sacramento State athletics history.
