BASEBALL DROPS FINAL GAME OF SERIES, 10-5, AT NORTHERN COLORADO

GREELEY,  Colo. — Gabe Jacobo went 3-for-5, including his 12th home run of the season, and Sacramento State outhit Northern Colorado, 14-13, but still fell 10-5 to the Bears in the series finale on Sunday. Northern Colorado won the three-game series, 2-1.

Jacobo was one of five Hornets to record multiple hits in the game. The sophomore picked up his 22nd multiple hit game of the year and his 12th with at least three hits. His home run, which led off the sixth inning, made the score 5-2 in favor of UNC. During the four games last week, Jacobo hit .529 (9-17) with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored. He also hit safely in all four contests.

On Sunday, Northern Colorado took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning. The Hornets tied the contest in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Montana Dye. Jacobo started the rally with a single and went to third on a single from Tim Wheeler before Dye drove him home.

The Bears took the lead for good with two runs in both the fourth and the fifth off of starter Trevor York.  Following Jacobo’s home run, UNC added to its lead with four runs in the sixth. Left-hander John Schlager started the inning but last just 0.1 inning before giving way to Cyrus Sarraf.

Sacramento State earned one of the runs back in the eighth inning when Dye homered for the second day in a row. The senior now has seven on the year to rank second on the team.

After the Bears scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Hornets scored two more runs in the ninth. An error put Taylor Watanabe on first base and Devin Spurling walked to start the inning. A fielder’s choice retired Spurling at second but David Flores singled with two outs to score both runs. The hit was the first for Flores during the day and extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

T.R. Keating was credited with the win and improved to 2-5 on the year. Keating threw seven innings and allowed two earned runs and 11 hits. York took the loss and fell to 1-9. Junior Ryan Magee pitched a scoreless eighth to keep his ERA at 0.00 in limited work. Senior Mel Cukcovich finished the game by allowing a run in the eighth inning.

The Hornet offense was bolstered by Ryan Blair, Gary Johnson, Wheeler, and Travis Kirkman, who each had two hits. Blair has now extended his hitting streak to a career best nine games.

Sacramento State will close out its regular season with three games next week. The Hornets will host UC Davis on Wednesday before playing two games against Santa Clara. The first will come on Saturday and will serve as the final home game of the year while the second will be played at Santa Clara.
