NEVADA EDGES BASEBALL 3-2 IN ANOTHER NAILBITER ON SUNDAY

5/14/2006

Once again Nevada’s late game heroics prevailed in a 3-2 win over Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park.

In the bottom of the eighth, Wolf Pack left fielder Trevor O’Sullivan doubled to center field to score Matt Bowman for the game winner.

The Hornets now 20-32 on the season and 8-13 in the Western Athletic Conference, were swept by the Wolf Pack in this weekend’s three-game series, but still hold onto the sixth place spot in the seven-team league. With the top six teams advancing to the WAC postseason tournament (May 25-28), Sacramento State controls its own destiny and needs one victory in its three-game series with Fresno State (May 19-21) to clinch a tournament berth.

Nevada now jumps to fifth place in the standings with a 21-27 overall record and 8-12 record in league.

Sacramento State took an initial 2-0 lead in the first when senior first baseman Brian Blauser hit a two-out, two-run homer over the left field wall. It was the ninth home run of the season for the Elk Grove, Calif., native, who finished the game 2-for-4, including his 13th double of the season.

The Wolf Pack scored one run in the second and tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Terry Walsh scored on Dan Eastham’s double down the left field line.

Sacramento State starter Travis Kane took the loss, despite pitching 7.0 innings and surrendering three runs on just five hits. Now 3-6 on the season, the right-hander recorded 11 strikeouts in the game, a new season-high for any Hornet pitcher in 2006. The mark also ties the Wenatchee, Wash., native for eighth in single-game program history.

Nevada’s Matt Renfree (2-2) earned the win after pitching 3.1 innings and holding the Hornets scoreless on just two hits.

The Hornets host Fresno State in their final conference series beginning on Friday at 2:30 p.m. All three games can be heard on www.hornetsports.com with the play-by-play provided by Dylan McKenzie.
