SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State baseball program signed Gary Johnson of Sierra College to a national letter of intent, it was announced today.Johnson, an outfielder for the Wolverines, received Northern California All-American honors after posting some of the top offensive numbers in the state.
Johnson finished the season 13th in the state with a .416 batting average, helping Sierra College to a 26-12 overall record and a 17-9 Bay Valley Conference record in 2005.
After posting 62 hits, 42 runs, 34 RBIs, 12 doubles, three home runs and one triple, Johnson was also named to the Bay Valley East all-conference team. During the season, he was also hit by a pitch on 20 occasions, while recording 22 stolen bases with a .570 slugging percentage and .494 on-base percentage.
“Gary will bring toughness and leadership to our program,” Sacramento State assistant coach Rusty McLain said. “He has the ability to play several positions and be a force offensively. We look forward to having him in our program as we begin our quest toward winning the WAC championship.”
A 2002 graduate of Del Campo High School, Johnson will suit up for the Hornets in 2006 as the program enters its first season as an affiliate member of the Western Athletic Conference.
The WAC will include Fresno State, Hawai’i, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, San Jose State and New Mexico State, with the top six teams advancing to the postseason tournament.
Sacramento State was a previous member of the WAC from 1993-96 and has competed as an independent team since the 2003 season.
Johnson joins the 2006 recruiting class which already includes Ryan Stevens of Del Campo Highs School, Trevor York of Arrowhead Christian Academy, Josh White of Lancaster High School and Brian Joyce of Chapparal High School.
