BASEBALL ENDS SEASON AND SAYS GOODBYE TO 11 SENIORS IN LOSS TO PACIFC

5/22/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In its final game of the season, Sacramento State failed to hold onto a one-run lead, falling 4-2 to Pacific on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.

Trailing 2-1 in the eighth inning, Pacific’s Jesse Kovacs singled to right field scoring Matt Berezay. A RBI-single from Will Brindza scored Kovacs for the go-ahead run as the Tigers took a 3-2 lead.

In the ninth inning a sacrifice fly from Adam Ching scored Anthony Jackson for Pacific’s insurance run.

The Hornets took an early lead in the first inning when senior Cliff Hinkle hit a lead-off double to left field. The second baseman from Temecula, Calif., who was playing in his final game, later scored when senior Pedro Santiago singled to center field for a 1-0 lead.

Hinkle finished the game 2-for-3 and ends his Sacramento State career with 41 hits, 26 runs and 10 doubles. Santiago, a fifth-year senior, recorded his 35th career RBI.

The Tigers’ Justin Baum tied things up at 1-1 in the fourth inning with his team-leading 16th home run, clearing the center field wall.

Sacramento State quickly responded in the bottom of the fourth when junior Jim Strombach singled up the middle to score junior Brian Blauser for a 2-1 lead. Blauser, an Elk Grove, Calif., native had doubled earlier in the inning for his 10th of the season. He also finished his day 2-for-4 from the plate.

For Strombach, it was his 19th RBI of the season, tying him for third on the team. The right fielder out of Aiea, Hawaii, finishes his season leading the team in several statistical categories, including hits (68), runs (33), stolen bases (15), doubles (14) and triples (2). The only player to start every game this year, Strombach also finishes second on the team with a .291 batting average.

Matthew Pena (4-3) earned the win for Pacific after pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. Pacific’s Josh Schmidt picked up his 11th save of the year pitching the final two innings of the game retiring the final six batters.

The Hornets used six different pitchers in the game, allowing seniors Marshall Hendon, Ken Livesey, Brandon Hall, Warren Rosebrock and Marshall Plouffe to pitch for their final time in a Hornet uniform.

Rosebrock, who made his 78th career appearance, took the loss after pitching 1.1 innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Rosebrock’s 78 appearances leaves the Citrus Heights, Calif., native, tied for second in program history.

Plouffe pitched the final inning of the game for his program-best 79th career appearance.

The Hornets end their season 20-36-1 while the Tigers improve to 27-28 on the year.
