BASEBALL TALLIES TWO TRIPLES IN 2-1 LOSS TO PACIFIC

5/21/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Freshman Taylor Watanabe scored the only run of the game for the Hornets and also recorded his first career triple, but Sacramento State fell short in a 2-1 loss to Pacific on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers’ Jason Haar (4-4) earned the win after pitching five innings and allowing just one run on five hits.

Trailing 1-0, Watanabe led off the bottom of the first inning in his first start at second base since May 7 with a triple to right center. The Aiea, Hawaii, native continues to lead the team with a .313 average.

Watanabe then scored the Hornets’ only run with senior Travis Kassebaum recording the RBI to tie the game at 1-1.

Pacific (26-28) scored the game-winning run in the third inning when Will Brindza’s ground-out RBI scored Brandon Gottier.

Junior left-hander Matt Campbell (3-9) took the loss for Sacramento State (20-35-1), pitching seven innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) while scattering 10 hits.

Offensively the Hornets were led by Kassebaum and junior Jim Strombach. Kassebaum went 2-for-3 on the afternoon with a double and triple. It was the Auburn, Wash., native’s first triple as a Hornet and his fourth double of the season.

Strombach went 3-for-4 from the plate bringing his team-leading hit total to 67. The Aiea, Hawaii, native, who leads the team with 20 multiple-hit games, also added his team-leading 15th stolen base of the season. Strombach’s 230 at-bats in 2005 rank him seventh in program history for at-bats in a single season. In his third year with the Hornets, Strombach’s 465 career at-bats rank him 10th in program history.

Pacific’s Josh Schmidt picked up his 10th save of the season pitching two innings and retiring the final six batters including striking out four.

Senior right-hander Marshall Plouffe pitched the final two innings of the game for Sacramento State in what could potentially be his final collegiate performance on the mound.

The Castaic, Calif., native allowed just one hit and also recorded one strikeout. His 260.2 career innings pitched rank him fourth in program history and his 78 career appearances also tie him for first in program history.

The fifth-year senior has also accumulated 187 career strikeouts, leaving him fourth in program history.

With the bases loaded in the eighth inning junior shortstop Everet Rincon came up with two consecutive defensive plays to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. The Riverside, Calif., native first threw Justin Baum out at home and then turned a double play to end the inning.

Sacramento State will end its season against Pacific at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The game will be the finale for 11 departing seniors with festivities starting at 12:45 p.m.

The game can be heard on KSSU 1580 and hornetsports.com. Greg Young and Dylan McKenzie of KSSU 1580 would also like to encourage any Hornet fans who have special messages for the Sacramento State baseball team to e-mail those thoughts to awenzel@csus.edu to be read on the air on Sunday.
