SACRAMENTO, Calif. - San Jose State’s Brad Kilby (6-1) pitched eight innings allowing just two runs on six hits in the Spartans’ 6-2 win over Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.The win gave San Jose State a 2-1 series victory over the Hornets.
It was a three-run seventh inning that gave San Jose State (26-24-1) its advantage. Leading 1-0 going into the seventh, the Spartans’ Nick Epidendio doubled down the left field line scoring Anthony Contreras and Travis Becktel. First baseman Brandon Fromm then singled to score Nate Corrick, giving the Spartans a 4-0 lead. Fromm went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with two RBIs. Becktel and Contreras also recorded two hits apiece.
San Jose State added two runs in the final inning, forcing the Hornets to go into the bottom of the ninth trailing 6-0.
Sacramento State (20-33-1) led off the ninth when senior Matt Wilson was walked. Junior Pat Keiper, who finished the day 2-for-4, then doubled to left field and freshman David Flores was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore Billy Sinacori''s ground out scored Wilson from third base to break the Hornets’ scoreless drought.
Junior Jim Strombach then singled to left field scoring Keiper for Sacramento State’s final run. Strombach, who went 2-for-5 on the afternoon, now leads the team with 64 hits and 19 multiple-hit games.
Sacramento State committed four errors on the afternoon and also stranded nine players on base.
Junior right-hander Travis Kane (3-5) took the loss for the Hornets after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits. The Wenatchee, Wash., native also recorded four strikeouts.
Sacramento State will close its season hosting Pacific for a three-game weekend series. The first game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20.
