BASEBALL TO PLAY DECIDING GAME WITH SPARTANS AFTER 2-0 LOSS

5/14/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A two-run inning in the top of the fourth inning was all San Jose State needed in a 2-0 win over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon.

Sacramento State is now 20-32-1 on the season while the Spartans improve to 25-24-1. After two games of the three-game weekend, the series is knotted up at 1-1 with the deciding contest to be played Sunday at 1 p.m.

Left-hander Matt Campbell (3-8) pitched his second complete game of the season and took the loss for the Hornets after allowing two runs on eight hits.

San Jose State’s Branden Dewing (6-4) held Sacramento State scoreless in his seven innings of work, allowing just six hits and tallying six strikeouts.

Travis Becktel, who led the Spartans going 2-for-4, led off the fourth inning with a single to right field. After a single from Anthony Contreras, a balk from Campbell advanced Becktel to third base and Contreras to second. Nick Epidedndio then doubled down the left field line to score the only two runs of the game.

It was just the second time this season the Hornets have been shutout.

In the loss to the Spartans, the Hornets tallied seven hits compared to the Spartans’ eight, but stranded eight base runners.

Junior Brian Blauser was the only Hornet with an answer for Dewing, going 4-for-4 in the game including two doubles. Blauser, an Elk Grove, Calif., native is now batting .270 on the year and has totaled nine doubles. The game also marked the second time this season he has had four hits in a single game, tying a career high.

In the last two games has now gone 5-for-7 with three doubles and one RBI.

San Jose State’s Steve Jones picked up his fourth save of the season after coming on in the ninth inning and striking out two of the final four batters.

Sunday’s 1 p.m. game can be heard on KSSU 1580 and www.hornetsports.com. The Hornets will end their season hosting a three-game series with Pacific. The first game is set for 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20.
