TANIGAWA SCORES AS BASEBALL FALLS AT NO.24 CAL POLY

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sacramento State struggled to get on the scoreboard in an 11-1 loss to 24th-ranked Cal Poly on Saturday night at Baggett Stadium.

The Mustangs now lead the three-game series 2-0 and their record improves to 29-14.

Sacramento State falls to 18-26-1 on the year.

Cal Poly right-hander Jimmy Shull (6-5) earned the win after holding the Hornets scoreless in six innings of work. Shull also surrendered just one hit while collecting seven strikeouts.

Cal Poly had a 2-0 lead after three innings, before tacking on six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Brent Walker’s two-run shot over the left field wall with two outs gave the Mustangs a 5-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Cal Poly’s Jimmy Van Ostrand’s RBI-double to left center scored Brandon Roberts and Matt Cooper. Van Ostrand scored the sixth run of the inning, making the score 8-0, after Kyle Blumenthal singled to left center.

Van Ostrand finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBIs and one run. Also collecting three hits in the game for the Mustangs were Josh Lansford and JJ Owen. Cal Poly scored an additional three runs in the seventh inning.

Sacramento State left-hander Matt Campbell (3-6) took the loss after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits.

The Hornets scored one run in the ninth inning of the game, when freshman Brett Tanigawa scored on a Cal Poly throwing error. Sophomore Mick Joyce and junior Pat Keiper had the two hits for the Hornets.

Joyce recorded a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning while Keiper had a double in the fifth.

The Hornets finish the month of April with a record of 10-9.
