ACHA, ARROYO, JOHNSON AND LEVIER SIGN MLB CONTRACTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State baseball players John Acha, Jack Arroyo, Craig Johnson and Bret LeVier each signed major league contracts, it was announced today. Johnson and LeVier, both juniors, will forgo their senior seasons to turn professional. Terms of each contract were not disclosed.

Arroyo, an 18th round selection by the Seattle Mariners, will report to Peoria, Ariz., for mini-Spring Training. The Manteca, Calif., native will then join the Peoria Mariners. Peoria, which is a member of the Arizona League, is the Rookie affiliate of the Mariners.

Johnson, a 19th-round selection by the San Diego Padres, will also report to Peoria, Ariz., for mini-Spring Training. He will then travel to Eugene, Ore., to join the Eugene Emeralds for short ‘A’ season. The Emeralds, who play in the Northwest League, are the Single-A affiliate of the Padres and will begin their season on June 18.

Acha, a 25th-round selection by the San Francisco Giants, will report to Scottsdale, Ariz., for mini-Spring Training before joining the Salem-Kaiser Volcanos for short ‘A’ season. The Volcanos, who play in the Northwest League, will begin their season on June 18. Acha became the second Hornet to be selected by the Giants in consecutive seasons after Jesse Schmidt was chosen in 2003.

LeVier, who signed as a rookie free agent with the Boston Red Sox, will report to Ft. Myers, Fla., for mini-Spring Training. The Whittier, Calif., native will then join the Ft. Myers Red Sox. Ft. Myers, which is a member of the Gulf Coast League, is the Rookie affiliate of the Red Sox.

“Although I’m disappointed to lose these great players, I’m very excited about the opportunity for them to continue their careers,” Sacramento State head coach John Smith said. “I know these four individuals will be a positive reflection of the program and I’m proud to have had the opportunity to coach them.”

It marked the second-consecutive season in which four Hornets signed a Major League contract. Steve Correa (FA), Chris Kinsey (fourth), Schmidt (10th) and Mikela Olsen (15th) each joined the professional ranks following the 2003 season. With three Hornets being drafted in 2004, Sacramento State received at least three picks in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1986-87.
