SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Senior second baseman Jack Arroyo was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, it was announced today. A native of Manteca, Calif., Arroyo was the 543rd overall pick in the first day of the draft.Arroyo became the first Hornet to be drafted by the Mariners since Harvey Hargrove in 1997. Hargrove, who was grabbed in the sixth-round, earned All-America honors as a second baseman. Arroyo’s selection also marked the first time Sacramento State players were picked in the top 20 rounds in consecutive season since 1990-91. Last year, juniors Chris Kinsey (fourth), Jesse Schmidt (10th) and Mikela Olsen (15th) were selected in the first day of the draft.
A first team all-NCAA Div. I Independent selection in his first year with the program, Arroyo served as the catalyst for the Hornet offense after transferring from the College of Charleston. After sitting out the 2003 season with a hand injury, he made a major impact on the Hornet roster as the squad’s lead-off man and starting second baseman in 2004. A team captain, Arroyo did not miss a game in the 2004 campaign and led the Hornets with 81 hits, 56 runs, eight home runs, 113 total bases and 20 stolen bases. His hit total places him tied for seventh in the program single-season record book. He also finished with a .327 batting average, six doubles, a triple, 32 RBI, a .456 slugging percentage and a .401 on-base percentage.
Among his other accomplishments during the year was a two-home run effort against San Francisco on May 4, a 4-for-4 performance at the plate against UC Santa Barbara on April 2, a 14-game hitting streak and a straight steal of home plate against Washington State on May 9. He also earned Hornet Bookstore Athlete of the Week honors on Feb. 15.
