PULLMAN, Wash. -- Aaron Trolia allowed only two hits in eight innings while the Cougars scored a run in seven of eight frames as Washington State defeated the Sacramento State baseball team, 17-3, Saturday evening at Bailey-Brayton Field.The Hornets dropped to 25-31 on the year while the Cougars improved to 24-19.
Washington State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI single to center field by Zach McAngus.
The Cougars made it 3-0 in the second when Justin McClure drove in a run with a fielder''s choice bunt and Jason Freeman plated Brandon Reddinger from third with a sacrifice fly to right field.
WSU increased its lead to 5-0 in the fourth after a two-run double down the right-field line by Jason Freeman.
The Cougars added two more runs in the fifth (7-0) after an RBI groundout by Reddinger and an RBI single by McClure.
WSU made it 8-0 in the sixth when Grant Richardson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Cougars increased the margin to 17-0 after scoring five runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth.
Sacramento State ended the shutout in the ninth (17-3) after a sacrifice fly by junior Bret LeVier and a pair of RBI singles by junior Kyle Aure and senior Jack Arroyo.
Aaron Trolia (5-4) earned the win after allowing no runs on two hits while walking four and striking out 11 in 8.0 innings of work.
Junior Warren Rosebrock (4-9) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking three batters in 3.2 innings.
Sacramento State and Washington State will play game two of the series on Sunday, May 9, at 2 p.m. The finale will be on Monday, May 10, at 11 a.m.
