JOHNSON NAMED DIV. I INDEPENDENT BASEBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior Craig Johnson has been named Div. I Independent Baseball Co-Player of the Week after leading the Sacramento State baseball teamâ€™s offense in four games last week, it was announced today. Johnson, who earned Newcomer of the Week honors earlier this season, joins senior John Acha (Player of the Week) and junior Ethan Katz (Pitcher of the Week, twice) as fellow Hornet recipients.
The Porterville, Calif., native led the Hornet offense by batting .615 (8-for-13) with five runs, three doubles, five RBI, 11 total bases, two walks, three hit by pitches, an .846 slugging percentage, a .722 on-base percentage, two stolen bases and no strikeouts in four games. On May 2, the right fielder went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored, two RBI, two walks and two stolen bases. With his performance, Johnson raised his batting average from .292 to .311.
The right fielder earned his first NCAA Div. I Independent honors after leading the Hornets to a four-game sweep over Pacific (Mar 25-28). Against the Tigers, Johnson batted 7-for-14 (.500) with a triple, a home run, eight runs and seven RBI.
A transfer from Porterville JC, he now leads the squad with three triples, 36 RBI, a .457 on-base percentage, eight sacrifice bunts, 16 stolen bases and a six-game hitting streak. He is also second with nine doubles and 46 runs.
Sacramento State (25-30) will next travel to Washington State for a three-game series. The first game will be on Saturday, May 8, at 7 p.m. The series will continue on Sunday, May 9, at 2 p.m. before the series finale on Monday, May 9, at 11 a.m.
