SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Cal scored 20 runs on 16 hits in the first three innings as the Golden Bears defeated the Sacramento State baseball team, 25-3, Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field. The 25 runs were the most allowed since Arizona put up 25 runs on March 16, 1994.Sacramento State fell to 23-28 on the year while Cal improved to 23-25.
Cal scored 10 runs on seven hits in the first inning, two runs on three hits in the second and eight runs on six hits in the third to take a 20-0 lead after three innings.
The Hornets scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth after a bases loaded RBI walk by sophomore Brian Blauser.
The Golden Bears added another run in the fifth after Brennan Boesch was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Sacramento State scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth after a two-run double by junior Brett Flowers.
Cal scored four runs on four hits in the ninth to end the scoring in the contest.
Matt Swanson (3-2) earned the win in the pre-determined start after allowing no hits while striking out a batter in 1.0 inning.
Junior Warren Rosebrock (4-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs (four earned) on five hits while walking a batter in 0.2 innings. Junior Brandon Hall contributed two innings of scoreless relief to lower his team-high ERA to 1.59. Senior Andy Mohr also added a scoreless inning of relief.
Flowers led the Hornet offense with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate and two RBI.
Sacramento State will next travel to San Jose State for a three-game series at Municipal Stadium. The first game will be on Friday, April 30, at 7 p.m. Game two will be on Saturday, May 1, at 1 p.m. before the finale on Sunday, May 2, at 1 p.m.
