SCHMIDT EXTENDS STREAK BUT BASEBALL FALLS TO NO. 4 STANFORD, 5-1

4/22/2003

Junior Jesse Schmidt extended his hitting streak to 24 games but the Hornets could not overcome a 3-for-4 performance by Carlos Quentin as the Sacramento State baseball fell to fourth-ranked Stanford, 5-1, Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field. The Hornets fell to 24-17 on the season while the Cardinal improved their record to 27-11. The contest was originally scheduled for April 12, but was postponed due to rain.

Stanford got on the board first after an RBI single by Danny Putnam in the fourth inning. Quentin led off the inning with a base hit to left and then advanced to third after a single by Ryan Garko to right. Putnam followed with a single to right field, scoring Quentin from third. After a sacrifice bunt by Donny Lucy put runners on second and third with one out, junior Chris Kinsey forced Chris Carter to pop to third and Jonny Ash to line out to third to end the threat.

Sacramento State tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning after a solo homer by Kinsey. For the Elk Grove native, it was his sixth round tripper of the season.

The Cardinal would put three runs up in the fifth after a sacrifice fly by Brian Hall and a two-run homer by Quentin. Kinsey got Tobin Swope to strike out swinging but reached third base after a throwing error to first by sophomore Matt Wilson. After Sam Fuld drew a walk, Hall hit a drive to center to give the Cardinal their second lead of the contest. Quentin would follow with a two-run shot to left field to put Stanford up 4-1.

Stanford would add another run in the eighth after a solo home run by Putnam.

Jonny Dyer (1-1) earned the win after allowing one run on two hits while striking out one and walking one in one and two-thirds innings.

Kinsey (5-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) with one walk and eight strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Schmidt, a native of San Diego, finished 2-for-4 in the contest and is now batting .397 on the season. Junior Mikela Olsen also finished 2-for-4 from the plate to raise his team-high batting average to .420.

Sacramento State will next host Hawai’i-Hilo for a five-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Thursday, April 24, at 12:30 p.m.
