ANTEATERS CLAIM 4-3 WIN OVER BASEBALL

5/12/2002

IRVINE, Calif. --- Matt Anderson’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as UC Irvine defeated Sacramento State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark.

The win improved UCI to 31-22 overall and 12-6 in the Big West Conference. The Hornets dropped to 19-31 overall and 1-17 in league games.

Sacramento State scored the game's first runs when Matt Wilson hit a bases-loaded double to center field to give the team a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.

The Anteaters bounced back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. The first run scored on a double by Anderson while the last two came in on a two-out error by Chris Kinsey.

The score remained tied until the seventh when Anderson flew out to left which allowed Jaime Martinez to score.

Sean Tracey improved to 8-6 with the win. Paul French picked up the save after allowing just one hit in two innings of work.

Sacramento State's Kevin Marzion (2-6) was dealt the loss. The senior, who was making his appearance since having his appendix removed on April 9, threw 7.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs.

UCI's Jordan Szabo led all players with three hits. Brett Dalton also collected a pair of hits for the Anteaters.

Senior Casey Fuller (2-for-4) was the lone Hornet to have multiple hits.

Sacramento State will play its final road games of the year next weekend as it travels to UC Santa Barbara. The three-game series will begin on Friday, April 17, at 2 p.m.
