No. 22 SPARTANS DEFEAT BASEBALL

5/7/2002

Senior Mario Celillo recorded a career-high four hits on Tuesday.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — No. 22 San Jose State scored six runs over the final two innings and five Spartan players recorded a pair of hits to lead SJSU to a 13-7 win over Sacramento State Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The victory improved San Jose State to 40-13 overall and gave the team its seventh-consecutive win and its 14th in the last 15 games. The Hornets had their two-game win streak snapped and fell to 18-29.

After Sacramento State tied the game, 5-5, the Spartans began to pull away with two runs in the sixth inning. The Hornets answered with a run in the seventh only to see SJSU post four runs in the eighth on RBIs from Nathan Corrick, Gabe Lopez, Kevin Frandsen and Travis Becktel.

Sacramento State made the score 11-7 with a run in the bottom of the eighth but San Jose State put the game out of reach in the ninth inning with a pair of runs coming on sacrifice flies.

The Spartans jumped on the board with a run in the first two innings and three runs in the third off of freshman Warren Rosebrock who was making his first collegiate start. The team’s 5-0 lead, however, was trimmed in the third inning when Casey Fuller singled up the middle to score two runs. The Hornets tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI-double from Ryan Brown and a two-run single from Chris Kinsey.

Don Gemmell (5-2) came out of the bullpen and held Sacramento State to two runs over 4.1 innings to earn the victory. Senior Dave Turner (0-2), who surrendered a pair of runs in 2.1 innings of work, took the loss.

Dino Quintero, Corrick, Lopez, Frandsen and Ryan Adams each had two hits to pace the San Jose State lineup. Designated hitter Hector Zamora also hit a two-run home run in the third inning for the Spartans.

The Sacramento State offense was sparked by senior Mario Celillo who was 4-for-5. The four-hit effort was the first for Celillo in his two years with the team. Tim Reimer and Kinsey each recorded three hits and Brown and Fuller tallied a pair.

The Hornets will next travel to UC Irvine for a three-game Big West Conference series starting on Friday, May 10. The team will not play a home game until May 24 when it welcomes Pacific for the final series of the 2002 season.
