FRESNO, Calif. --- Senior Jeff Groeger threw his second complete game of the season to help lead Sacramento State to an 8-3 victory over Fresno State Saturday night at Beiden Field.The victory improved the Hornets to 17-28 overall. The Bulldogs dropped to 26-23 and had their 15-game home win streak snapped.
Groeger's performance marked the second-consecutive season where he has recorded a complete-game win at Fresno State. The senior scattered nine hits and struck out three during the game.
Sacramento State jumped to an early lead when Mario Celillo hit a two-run home run in the first inning. The Bulldogs bounced back with three runs in the second behind a solo HR from Christian Hallaian, a botched pick-off attempt and a single from Casey McGehee.
Fresno State's, 3-2, lead was its last of the game as the Hornets scored two runs in the third on Chris Kinsey's 16th home run of the season. The team added to its lead in the fourth inning when Tim Reimer singled to plate Tito Barba. The score remained, 5-3, entering the ninth inning before Sacramento State posted three more runs to put the game out of reach.
As a team, the Hornets tallied 12 hits led by a strong performance from the top of the lineup. The 1-4 hitters (Reimer, Ryan Brown, Kinsey and Celillo) for Sacramento State each had two hits and combined to score six runs while driving in six. Senior Tito Barba also added two hits.
Fresno State was paced by Scott Beshears and McGehee who each had two hits.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday. The game will start at 1 p.m. at Beiden Field.
