SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Joey Gomes was 4-for-5 and A.J. LaBarbara, Jack Headley and Jim Wallace each added three hits to help lift Santa Clara to an 18-1 win over Sacramento State Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field. The win completed a sweep for the Broncos over the Hornets in the two games this season.With the victory, Santa Clara is now 18-24 overall. Sacramento State fell to 15-23 overall.
The Broncos scored the game’s first run when Ryan Chiarelli singled scoring Scott Dierks in the third inning. The Broncos added to their lead with three runs in the fourth inning sparked by triples from Gomes and Headley.
Sacramento State scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single by Ryan Brown which plated Mario Celillo. From that point, the Broncos produced two runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, eighth in the eighth and two in the ninth.
The eighth inning saw SCU send 13 men to plate which resulted in six hits. For the game, Santa Clara tallied 20 hits, including eight for extra bases. Eleven Broncos collected at least one hit in the game and the team also had three triples.
Celillo and Brown were the only two Hornets to have at least two hits. Sacramento State was limited to nine hits during the game by three Bronco pitchers. The team also did not make the most of its early opportunities as it hit into three double plays during the first five innings.
Despite allowing all nine hits in his six innings of work, John Redmond (4-5) picked up the win. He was followed by Chad Fillinger and Grant Feichtmeir who did not allow a hit over the final three innings.
Dave Turner (0-1), who was making his first start of the season, took the loss for Sacramento State.
The Hornets will quickly return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 24, when they travel to No. 4 Stanford. The game was originally scheduled for May 21 but had to be moved due to the fact that it conflicted with Sacramento State’s final exams.
