HOULTON HANDCUFFS BASEBALL, LIFTS PACIFIC TO 6-2 WIN

5/17/2001

STOCKTON, Calif. - Less than one week after throwing a no-hitter,

D.J. Houlton tossed a complete game to lead the University of the

Pacific to a 6-2 victory over Sacramento State Thursday afternoon at

Billy Hebert Field.

The win improved the Tigers to 24-29 overall and 4-12 in the Big West

Conference. It also moved UOP one game ahead of the Hornets (23-34,

3-13) for the cellar in the conference standings.

Pacific staked an early lead, scoring three runs on three hits and a

hit batter. The three-run advantage was plenty for Houlton who

allowed just two runs and eight hits in nine innings of work. Houlton

also struck out seven while allowing no walks.

Sacramento State made the score 3-1 in the fourth inning when Joe

Evans singled down the left field line scoring Bobby Ciani from

second. The comeback, however, was short-lived as UOP scored twice in

the fifth taking advantage of a pair of Hornet errors. Sacramento

State's other run came in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Joe

Evans which plated Aurelio Jackson.

The Tiger offense was led by Joel Summer, Richard Hackett, Chris

Moreno and Octavio Amezquita who each had a pair of hits. Ciani,

Carlos Morales and Evans were the only Sacramento State players with

multiple hits. Jackson doubled in the sixth inning and has now

reached safely in 56 of the team's 57 games.

The series will continue on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled

for 7 p.m. The team's will then take Saturday off before concluding

the season on Sunday at 1 p.m.
