SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge collected 13 hits and breezed to a 9-1 win over Sacramento State Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field. Adam Nikolic, Tim Arroyo and Jason Allec led the team with a pair of hits apiece.
The win improved the Matadors to 30-22 overall and 8-9 in the Big West Conference. The Hornets fell to 23-32 overall and 3-11 in Big West games.
For the second-straight day, CSN scored early and often. Northridge plated two runs in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth to lead 5-0. The first inning runs scored on a double by Arroyo while the two in the second came home on a double by Jeremy Hanson.
Sacramento State tried to get back into the game in the fourth when Dave Lusk singled to right field scoring Carlos Morales. The Hornets, however, could not pull any closer. Northridge starter Andy Davidson imited the team to six hits and one run in his seven innings of work. Davidson also struck out nine while walking one.
The Matadors took full control of the game in the seventh when Tim Arroyo hit a solo home run to left field. Hanson drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Allec plated the final run of the inning with a single to center. CSN added another run in the ninth inning when Aaron McKenzie hit his second pinch-hit home run in as many days. McKenzie's blast, which was his third of the season, landed on the roof of the parking structure in left field.
Freshman Chris Kinsey (1-4) was dealt the loss. Kinsey threw seven innings and allowed 11 hits and six earned runs. The Elk Grove, Calif., native struck out three and walked two.
The Sacramento State offense was led by Morales and Tim Maghan who each had two hits.
The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the Hornets will honor their 11 seniors who will be playing in their final home game.
